Unusual Fruits and Veggies to slice and dice on your cutting board

Here are 6 unusual fruits and vegetables that will add some color to your diet.

We are frequently told to eat more fruits and vegetables every day. Most of us try to follow this dietary rule, but it's always the same old thing: we get tired of eating them pretty quickly. Here are 6 unusual and eccentric fruits and vegetables for you to prepare on your cutting board in order to add some variety to your favorite meals or salads.

Dragon Fruit: The dragon fruit, whose real name is pitaya, is a fruit native to South America and Asia. It's red spiky exterior hides a white speckled flesh that is sour, juicy and refreshing.

Chayote: This pear shaped vegetable's skin can be either smooth or spiky. It is native to Central America and it can be eaten raw, in salads or salsas.

Chinese artichokes: The Chinese artichoke, who's less common name is the Crosne, can intimidate more than one person because of it's appearance that reminds anyone of a caterpillar. It is often eaten pickled, sautéed or as garnish in salads.

Cherimoya: With an average size similar to that of a grapefruit, the flavor of this fruit is quite original. It is described as being a mixture of pineapple, banana and strawberry. Because of this unusual sweet flavor, it is often found in fruit salads and desserts.

Persimmons: This little orange fruit could almost be mistaken for a tomato. When in season, it's used in salads or desserts and it is often pureed or used in sauces.

Pomelo: This fruit is one of the halves responsible for giving birth to the grapefruit. Grapefruits are a combination of an orange and a pomelo. It is the largest citrus fruit in Asia and its pink flesh taste much like the one found in a grapefruit, except it is much sweeter.
